ARCH Lab MSc Student wins 4th Place in GRADFlix Showcase

Congratulations to Kiran Dhuga, MSc student with the ARCH Lab, who was awarded 4th place in the 2023 GRADflix virtual showcase!

GRADflix is a research communication opportunity for graduate students at the University of Waterloo where participants were invited to create a video, moving slide show, or animation of no longer than 60 seconds in length that describes their research.

Kiran’s thesis research highlights that parents of children with a physical illness may experience adverse outcomes such as elevated levels of depressive symptoms. Unfortunately, parental depression also increases the risk for mental illnesses in children. In her research, Kiran aims to :

  1. assess how depressive symptoms among parents of children with a physical illness change over 24 months
  2. identify factors that predict parental depressive symptoms
  3. determine how depressive symptom levels among parents impact the presence of mental illness in children with a physical illness

Her work may help identify parents with an increased susceptibility for poorer mental health outcomes and prevent or reduce the incidence of mental illness in children with a physical illness.
